That's just not right. You've got the concept wrong, man! The entire premise of the low carb diet is simply the reduction of the amount of insulin in your body. Why? Insulin causes the rapid build-up of stored fat from carbohydrates. When carbs are significantly reduced, so is the insulin. When insulin is reduced, glucagon appears and begins to break down the stored fats. The more glucagon and the less insulin, the more fat is burned. Ketones develop as a by-product of the burning of fat. The body, when deprived of carbs, makes it's own carbohydrates from the fat. It is not complete combustion but it does the trick...thus ketone bodies which are eliminated in the urine. Ketone breath smells like acetone, which is not really "bad" breath but a more sweet, chemical smelling breath (which I'd rather have than the usual fecal smelling bad breath). The body adjusts to the reduced level of carbohydrate intake which occurs during the first phase of any low carb diet. During the latter stages, more carbs are introduced but only in limited amounts so there's no complete depletion of carbs. Even in the initial phase, there are up to around 30 g of carbs taken in each day. The only time low carb diets don't work well is when the dieter does not stick to the program and/or does not drink an adequate supply of water daily. Otherwise, the diet is effective and practically harmless. Get some more facts.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3984185285946329034.post-46135604975900767492008-04-07T22:50:00.000-07:002008-04-07T22:50:00.000-07:00Great article, thanks for sharing it!
